I've always kind of rolled my eyes at the Simon and Garfunkel mega classic "Bridge Over Troubled Water." So maudlin. But the other night I was rocking in my chair with a sleeping baby listening to Simply Folk and it came on and BOOM: weeping. That song, by the way, is totally about rocking your sleeping baby while listening to folk music on npr. That's why I never got it before.
Tonight my sister M. is at her mom's hospital bedside--she's been there for days, now, through several emergency surgeries. Years, really, if you count all the bedside watches she's been on since her mom was diagnosed with cancer. Tonight, I think that Simon and Garfunkel song must be about M. and her mom. I can imagine her mom singing it to her, and M. singing it to her mom, and I'm singing it for M., tonight, too.
We all know the words, but here they are:
When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you

I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Sail on Silver Girl,
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
